2027 MCAT Test Dates: How to Choose Yours

MCAT registration recently opened. Students may be wondering when the best time to take the exam is. Here are some tips to consider in making your decision:

1. Think about when you're going to submit your AMCAS. Scores are generally released a little more than a month after the exam date, so testing in January through April ensures your score is back before submission. Testing in May through July means the score will arrive after submission. Testing in August or September is for those applying in the following cycle.

2. Do not take the test if you're not ready. Remember that every completed, non-voided exam score is visible to admissions officers.

3. Book soon because seats fill quickly. You can hold the date and move it before the 60-day deadline for $55.

4. Make sure you leave time before submission to retake the test. I've had clients who waited to take the exam until late spring or early summer, only to fall ill or have a family emergency. This leaves them with no opportunity to retake the test.

5. Note that most medical schools only accept scores that are no more than two or three years old. Don't take the test too early in your academic career. This is especially important if you might take one or two gap years.

6. Know that certain test dates are available only in specific, major cities. If you live in a smaller town, check where you can readily take the exam.

7. Consider your personal schedule – final exams, family celebrations, etc.
